FPS drop after Nvidia 1080 ti installed with P3D

Postby scottw1204 » Thu Apr 27, 2017 11:43 am

Trying to troubleshoot a sharp drop in fps after upgrading to an Nvidia 1080 Ti.

Had a 980 Ti and smooth 30-40fps with most sliders at high or max. For some reason though, after upgrading to the 1080 and keeping all the settings the same, performance plummeted to 15 FPS. Lowering sliders had little effect. Fly Inside engine runs fine though at 89-90.

Not sure why/how this happened, any thoughts where to look?

Again, same exact settings for P3D from one card to the next. Other VR games work fine and I see a big increase in quality/speed.

Only other note is that just prior to starting P3D, it asked to upgrade some kind of Object software (didn't pay too close of attention, just clicked yes). Anyone else asked to upgrade this?

I've had a lot of problems with my 1080ti in general.

Is it just p3d that its having issues with?

I upgraded from a 1070 to 1080 and noticed that after the change of the card a lot of settings were reset, i. e. the NVIDIA settings and maybe the FlyInside settings also - I'm not quite sure on that. Also pay attention if the NVIDIA settings are overwritten by an application, for example X-Plane.exe in this case.

I also did a reinstall of the driver of course....

@Stevil - the control panel could be it. Any particular setting on your rig you noticed impacted frame rates in a big way?

@blair3680 - have only noticed P3D having issues at the moment although it's still early in the upgrade process so haven't tested a lot games. Tried Aerosoft FS2 and Raw Data with settings on max and both did well.

After a few more hours of trial and error, I'm stumped.
I turned all the sliders to low, disabled reflections, water effects...all the usual suspects... and my frame rate is still a sluggish 15fps. I'm using Megascenery which has little to no auto gen. Just about everything is off except VR.
By all accounts, my overclocked i7 6700K + 1080ti + 32GB of Ram + SSD drives should be fast as an F-15 but I can't even get ultralight speed. Ugg.
Trying to be a smart guy, I removed the 1080 Ti and put back my 980 ti, then restored my system from a backup to see if things would return to normal. And... the results stayed the same...terrible 15fps frame rate. Two weeks ago, using the same exact configuration, things were great...30-60 fps.

So, before my machine goes on a solo flight across my living room landing in the wall, I'd love to hear suggestions.

Have you selected prefer maximum performance in the NVIDIA control panel? Is VSYNC off?

Prehaps the 1080ti installation with it came a new Nvidia driver? Have you tried rolling back the graphics card driver at all

I have just updated to a 1080ti as well and my frame went up as expected, XP11 though.

Thanks for the replies. Have Vsync off and tried 2 different drivers but so far no change.
I also tried Xplane and noticed the same bad performance... low frame rates with settings on low.
Just guessing here but I suspect it's not the card but something software related or, much less likely, BIOS.
I'll try reinstalling P3D and see what happens. Could also do a clean install of Windows but that's a last resort... and I wouldn't learn what went wrong In the first place. Open to other ideas as well.

Just an idea and maybe a dumb question but can you check if your 1080ti is used as your primary gfx card? If I remember right we also had someone who accidentally had his integrated GPU used instead of his accelerated one.

Have you used one of the graphics driver uninstallers? If not download one and give that a go then reinstall.
