Lining up real controls

Postby jimrooney » Fri Sep 22, 2017 3:32 pm

Hey guys.
Has anyone worked out a good way to sync up real world controls with the simulated ones?

For instance, if I've got the correct yoke for a plane, I'd love to have it right where it is in VR.

I know the interaction capabilities and challenges of flyinside's native solutions, but I'm after this specific thing. If I can reliably have a few key components line up with real world devices, I can do heaps with this.

Thanks

I have a Warthog HOTAS, which is a replica of the stick and throttles in an A10 and when I fly the DCS World A10C, I try to position the controls as close to where their VR counterparts are. To achieve this flexibility, I have a wheelstandpro stand which provides for loads of adjustment and has the added bonus that you can fold it up and store it away when you aren't using it

I've found a great company here = http://www.monstertech.de/en/product/jo ... ble-mount/ might be worth a little look Jim ?

I'll be ordering these for my warthog when funds allow :)

I'm checking what I need right now... I just haven't tried disabling the resetting of position in a while... I assume I can... but like the first time the sim launches, it wants to recenter.

I'm on an old rig of mine, so it's probably way behind in terms of version, so I'm updating everything before I get too specific about needs because I may have what I need out of the box...

BUT... basically, If I can do what I want, I can possibly have the full actual cockpit (or any subset of it) of a plane to rig this all up in... but... I need to match the virtual position with the real position and then never have it change.
If I can do that, then I can have real controls and switches that work in the sim as well.

Oh, if I can get the dream world of all of this working, there's a chance I can get it all certified (New Zealand, not USA) and have a sim that we can log real time in. That's a bit far down the road and could be a pipe dream, but it all starts with having real objects match virtual ones on an at least mostly reliable basis.

That will be the best idea if you plan to always fly the same aircraft or aircraft that have the controls in the same position. If you want to fly a combination of airliners, GA, military, gliders and/or helicopters however, or even different makes of airliners, like me, you might need a little more flexibity.

For example, Airbus and some GA aircraft have the stick on the left, Boeings have a yoke in the centre and so on.

As you are going to be using a headset, the appearance of your real world rig will not be as important as how it feels, so if you are going to fly a few types of aircraft, a yoke, stick, throttle controls and cyclic/collective would make the realism/immersion even greater.

Some peeps do want to specialise and I am guessing that there are quite a few that are already building A320 replica cockpits, for when the FF A320 is released and for VR, that would mean a stick on the left and a throttle control on the right. If you want to go crazy, there are some fantastic looking, and probably feeling, controls for the Airbus, but they cost a lot.

Good luck with whichever way you decide to go

The idea isn't specifically to fly a particular aircraft although it's fine to go that way if needed.

The big trick is to have a stable start.
What I've settled on so far is to completely throw out any idea of "recentering" the view and to instead set the Oculus center and physically moving the cameras to center the Sim.

That way, when flyinside starts, its default center is correct.

So shifting the controls to suit the plane would be a natural move, but I'd also have a think about moving the cameras if necessary.
