New hardware discussion

Postby M100psi » Tue Dec 26, 2017 1:19 pm

Hi,

I’m upgrading my system (mb, cpu, ram, gfx) specifically to support Oculus Rift with FSX. Is there a consolidated list of recommendations / trade offs that’s newer than the 2016 wiki?

FlyInside is still in active development, correct? The wiki update being 1.5 years old is a little disconcerting.

Thanks,
Matt

Hi Matt,

I don't represent Flyinside but it looks like development is very much in progress. A recent update has just come out and the devs / forum ops are very active in here.

As for specs, just the usual oculus minimums apply I guess. 8gb ram, gtx1070 card (or amd equiv, I don't know amd cards much) and i5 cpu.

However, I am currently slightly under the specs. I have a 7th gen i3, 8gb ram and only a mere 1050 card. The screen moans at me for being below specs and I may experience poor performance etc etc, but so far it works fine! As soon as I can afford a new gfx card I will get one I promise! Weirdly the oculus compatibility program accepts my i3 as ok :)

I do agree the wiki is pretty poor, and the lack of a manual is poor too. The outside view would certainly make it look unloved and perhaps this needs addressing.

Hope that helps!

Hi Matt, my biggest recommendation is to get the best single core performing cpu you can afford, good ddr4 ram and a 1080 if budget allows. Also a good mobo and psu. Water cooling and a Good, solid case ;)

Hey mates,

sinver pretty much nailed it, thanks buddy! :D

We are still here, we are reading your worries, trying to solve your problems, Dan and the team is working hard on updates. I have to agree the wiki is pretty much outdated but there's a lot of information you can get from this forum here.

Like sinver correctly said: VR is very hungry on both, CPU and GPU. Better invest into a good i5/i7 and a GeForce 1070 (or better).

Best regards
Stephan

Thanks all for the replies. Looks like a pretty major upgrade is in order...I ran the SteamVR test and it basically said the only thing my system is doing right is running Windows 10.

Planning to go with a 7700k and 1070--FSX is the only game I run, so a 1080 is hard to justify. Is SDRAM (system SDRAM, not GDDR SDRAM) speed a significant factor for flight sim VR? I generally just get the top speed the processor supports, but am wondering if investing time to learn about overclocking memory would be worthwhile.

Thanks,
Matt

Hi,

Has anyone gone for one of the new Coffee Lake processors?

I'm running a Skylake 6700k, flat out, while my 1080ti is cruising along with loads to spare. I'm wondering if a Coffe Lake 8700k would gIve me a worthwhile boost?

Any references I've found so far are related to monitor use, while VR is so different.

Little bit of reading here Jim, might help you decide. I still have the 6700K and overclock it to 4.5 and am very happy with it. But have a read = https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.redd ... new_intel/

Hi Tony,

Thanks for the link. I've had a read and the 8700k seems likely to be the best upgrade for P3D4.1.

I've o'clocked my 6700k to 4.7 and get a very smooth performance from it, but on a flight with medium P3D settings, Active Sky, and PF3 running I tend to get "Waiting for Simulator" interuptions at intervals, with Process Explorer showing the cpu maxed out.

I've done a lot of experimenting with Affinity Masks and Process Lasso, but have not found a solution. Maybe I'm greedy, but I'd like to be free of these interuptions and in addition up my settings a little.

If I do upgrade to an 8700k I'd also have faster ram, but I don't know how significant that would be performance wise.

Any feedback on the importance of system SDRAM (either datarate or utility of having more than 8 GB)?

Thanks,
Matt
