Best freeware helicopter in x-plane.

Postby Rift Flyer » Wed Sep 13, 2017 10:54 am

For those who like to fly helicopters in x-plane I'm sure the freeware bell 429 global ranger needs no introduction. It is easily the greatest freeware package available but.... there is always a but! It has a couple of small issues when used with flyinsideXP. The window frames of the door windows have a very strange texturing issue when viewed in VR. There is also a couple of plugin windows for options and winch operations which can't be viewed in VR directly. I am uploading a short video to show the texturing problem and hopefully some of the team could take a look and see if it's something that can be easily fixed. The later issue requires the developer to make the plugin interface a separate window so it can be imported into flyinside. I will ask them about doing that directly.

Here is a link to the x-plane 11 version for those who may like to try it. There is also a wheeled version available.

I'll add the video link shortly. It would be great if we could find a fix.

As someone who hadn't flown a helicopter in XPlane 11 for more than 5 minutes before @Rift Flyer introduced me to this one, i can certainly testify to its quality and if you are in the same position as i was, it is definitely worth a try.

Is it the shimmering ? I'll take a look at the paint files and see if it's an easy change over to DDS or if its a bmp. Leave it with me and I'll have a look.

I've discovered the developer is aware of the window issue and is working on it. In the mean time I'd suggest others try some of the liveries which feature a bubble window on the pilot door (Canada coast guard, Air Zermatt etc) or you can edit the livery config.dat file for any other livery and enter the line "curved_window" without quotes to add the bubble window to that livery.

The plugin issue is a default feature of x-plane unfortunately and cannot be made a separate window and imported into flyinside without help from Laminar research.
