Finnaly no flicker at 3840x2133

Postby BOZ » Sun May 22, 2016 9:52 am

Wow, was I disappointed at first but I seem to have ironed out the flickering issue for my system.

This is how I went about it.

I set everything in P3D and FI at minimum including disabling FI SMAA.
First up is I want to run at maximum FI resolution and get the best gauges possible so I set FI to 3840x2133.
I found that with everything at min or disabled, I could run 3840x2133 with no issues.
If this is all I could do I would be almost happy because 3840x2133 looks so good.

This is the point where I thought I'd try to just get the best cockpit possible so I started increasing FI SMAA and P3D MSAA as well as P3D texture filtering.
Here I discovered that I quickly ran out of headroom and got the flickers if I did much with P3D MSAA. After a lot of back and forth I found I have to leave that set to NONE as well as FI SMAA set to DISABLED.

P3D Texture Filtering did not seem to have as big an impact but I did find that as I increased other settings I had to keep notching it back. I'm currently at 4X with no flickers.

During all of this I tried all my setting changes with all levels of Tessellation factor and found that none of the settings made any difference whatsoever. It is as if it's a broken control. After everything was done I set it on ULTRA and forgot about it but it didn't do anything anyway.

Now that the plane was looking awesome my next priority on the wish list was to get the land textures back as much as possible. I ended up at 1m on Texture resolution.

For me the world can do without those goofy looking boxy buildings but I need me some trees! After all was done I ended up on NORMAL for Autogen vegetation density.
With a crisp plane, trees and farm fields below, I was about as happy as I could be. But I was missing airport structures...

These came back by setting P3D Scenery Complexity to Normal. To my surprise the flickers did not come back and I was at ORBIX Juneau at the time and that's a lot of structures.

Here I discovered the water was horrible so I punched that up to Low with cloud reflections to bring back a decent surface. So far so good.

Lastly I was able to bring back some cockpit shadows for the cherry on the cake with a setting of Low with Internal vehicle cast and receive.

It seems to me that the killer was always P3D MSAA. I just can't seem to ever touch that thing so it is left to NONE.

MAX resolution on FI at 3840x2133 is AWESOME! love my gauges. I wish I could go another setting higher because I think I could get more but I ran out of buttons! Next version maybe?

I ended up going down in frame rate to the 60s at times with a bit of the candy but the flickers didn't return. The following screenshot isn't totally representative because it was during my water tests but it does look good.

EDIT:

A2A Spit at ORBX Rohnerville doing well also...

Hi,
thanks for sharing your experiences. In short it will be:

    *FI SMAA disabled
*All P3d and FI to minimum
    *FI resolution to 3840x2133
    *P3D texture filtering to 4X
    *Tessellation factor to ultra
    *Texture resolution to 1m
    *Autogen vegetation density to normal
    *P3D Scenery Complexity to normal
    *Water to Low
    *Cloud reflections to low
*Cockpit shadows to low with internal vehicle cast and receive

I'm very exited to check it out.

I was trying to convey a methodology more than prescribed settings.

This works for my rig and where I was flying.

The idea being, start with nothing, decide what you want if you can only have one thing. If that works, what is the minimum of the next one thing you would want? No Active sky when in VR and my Rex textures are at the minimums as well.

I have a pretty heavy duty rig so I may be the last one for most to follow. But your system is comparable to mine with a bit better graphics card so you should be able to run these settings. But my 5960X on multi-core processing may get ya. I am doing a light overclock on the CPU and GPU with water cooling as well as turning down any Orbix settings I can as well.

As wonderful as the programm is, the flickers render the programm - in its current state - unuseable for me. Following the suggested method of turning everything down didn't solve the problem for me. I really hope that there will be a fix ... and soon :D

ah that is a whole other issue...

As inefficient as the beta FlyInside for Vive may be at the moment that is definitely a PC issue then. You shouldn't have any problems after turning down the settings. You may not be able to do 3840x2133 like those of us with the high end CPUs and GPUs but not to be able to fly at all probably means you need to upgrade even after Dan gets the code sorted out.

Hm, I'd think that my System is good enough to handle it (MSI GTX 980 TI, 3930K oc to 4,3 GHZ, Win10, everything on SSDs) as I don't have any stutters or low fps.

One thing I noticed is that if I turn every slider in P3D down and set the target framerate to unlimited, that I receive the worst flickers ever (fps being around 120!), but once I limit the fps to 30 for example, I can fly with only some occasional flickers. Of course, it is not pretty to fly with the lowest settings. But since the flickers seem to be fps independent, I still hope that the flickers are a software problem and can be fixed with an update.

I fly unlimited but I do notice if I get much below 60 I flicker if I get 30 forget about it.

Well the 5960X is a powerhouse on the CPU end so that could be it on why I can do this.

Edit:
Looks like my CPU is more than 50% faster where it counts so that's probably it.

Now that I think about it there may be a clue in what you said.

I also got the massive frame rate yet flicker problem in the beginning of my process!

Maybe this behavior is helpful to Dan in debugging...

I am still unable to use full resolution even trying your method. Are you using direct mode? I was able to turn direct mode off and stop the flickering but it became very juddery, which was solved by turning the resolution down to mid-range. I didn't get any crashes as others have described when turning off direct mode though.
