Flicker Back with latest version of Steam VR?

Postby solarisfire » Wed Jul 06, 2016 3:56 pm

So upgraded to the GTX 1080 now and I've run into the black flickering everyone has been experiencing.

Turning on always on reprojection fixed it. Was super happy.

Since SteamVR upgraded itself yesterday evening, I've now got flickering again, even with reprojection turned on in the Steam VR settings :'(

Is anyone else getting this?

Think I figured it out...

Latest patch notes:

Compositor:
Switched back to waiting for vsync when always-on reprojection is enabled.

Yet flyinside forced vsync to be turned off... Therefore the frames never get reprojected :(

File bug reports with Valve and ask for the option to turn this behavior back off again.

I just tried it with always-on reprojection turned off but allow reprojection on, and with them both off and I get the black flashes too.

Just filed a support ticket with Valve on this and please, everyone else do too. We need to get this fixed. Even with a 1080, I'm getting these black flashes when before it was beautiful and smooth.

What we need is the ability to turn off having it wait for vsync or them just to take that back out. Not sure why they "switched back" to having it wait but I assume there is probably some reason they did. If they have a good reason then they will want to keep the ability and the default but we need a way to change that behavior.

So please, please, file a ticket on this too. They need to see this is a problem for us using the Vive with FlyInside. I hate those flashes and am effectively grounded as I won't fly with them. Annoying as all hell.

I posted on the bugfix section of their discussion boards.

Where do I raise a request?

I've submitted a ticket. Tickets can be raised on Steam, Community, Steam VR, General Discussions, First Post: Steam VR Support. Follow Links.

Its kind of an involved process but if you go to help/support it will ask you what product.put in SteamVR and then you get a list of faqs and guides. I went into the troubleshooting one (nothing applicable that I saw) and down at the bottom is the option to file a ticket. And to file a ticket you need to create a customer service account but then you can describe the problem and attach a system report though I don't think that's really applicable but did it anyway. When you attach the report (there are instructions on how to do it), be sure to add a comment like here is your report or else the report doesn't seem to actually attach. When you look at your ticket you should see the attachment listed if it uploads and attaches properly.

It's a pain in the ass but not too bad but we also need to let them know this broke an application.

Thanks for doing it!

I have a backup copy of the previous steamvr version on my disk. I don't know if it works but I will try to rollback the old version on my pc. If it works, I could upload the old files. But I don't know if this is allowed - does anybody know something about it? I expect that you simply need to replace the vrcompositor.exe file
