UPGRADE to gtx 1070

Postby frankbicknell » Mon Jul 11, 2016 7:51 am

After doing some tests on the R390 I found that with some more advanced settings the GPU would max out a 100% and then I would get the jerky motion when looking around. The CPU never went higher than 60%. So I changed out my AMD R390X for a GTX 1070. Man that is one big friggen card. Since I have moved up to the 1070, the max I have seen for the GPU is 92%. I get no jerky motion. I can set the resolution to 4000 x 2221 which is fairly crisp. What a relief. Things were smooth... but I couldn't leave it at that... ;)
So... I decided to spice things up a bit with the ORBX global and vector modules. I thought this might reduce the load on the GPU. However it seems to have increased the load (which makes sense now). There may be a way to tweak the settings. I now have an annoying flash, just like blinking my eyes, which happens randomly about every 3 to 5 seconds. It increases as the scenery gets more complex. The GPU still maxes out at 92% the CPU is still low. I can see in Steam VR that there are many missed frames. I am not sure of how to troubleshoot this further. When I decrease the scenery complexion The flashes slow down to 1 every 10 seconds or so. The flashes are much less painful than the jerky motion but still annoying nonetheless. If anyone has any ideas of how to go about fixing this please let me know.
PS I am not getting the black flashing so maybe Steam has fixed that problem.

So further experimentation I thought I would try the displayport on the vive thinking that since the GPU and CPU are not at maximum there may be an issue with the video signal.
The displayport 1.2 signal is faster than the HDMI.
But to my surprise I found out that the displayport on the 1070 and 1080 cards do not work with the vive, another hour wasted. Nviidia is supposed to have a fix this week.

I had forgotten how frustrating it can be when you are working with technical products in their infancy.

IF I select the highest resolution in the flyinside settings the flashing reduces to once every 10 seconds or so. There seems to be a big difference in the crispness of the display between 4000 and 3840 so I would like to be able to bump the resolution back up to 4000 again. At 4000 resolution I can read the HUD without any effort. I am still trying to figure out why frames are missed when the the CPU and GPU are not at maximum.

Yeah, the 1070/1080 is a bit of an odd card. There seems to be a number of optimizations and speed ups that don't kick in until certain load levels are hit. Throttling for temperature is another big one that gets people and stock fan curves seem to put people into thermal throttling. One thing I do is have fans spin up to full speed by 50C to keep from even getting close to thermal throttling.

But you aren't the only one who has noticed regular but widely spaced slowdowns which may suggest some background process interfering. I also suspect there are many optimizations yet to be had. Not sure how many we can get in FlyInside since the majority of the code is hidden from Dan, but I expect some.

The 1080 sure made a big difference for me, though. If Dan can access any of the new VR features in the 10 line, we may see some significant performance improvements.

After the tip from this thread viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2428 . I went from 1582 to 1976 MHz. in the VR Ready mode. The random flashing (like eye blinking) problem that I had went away. I was able to bump my display resolution to 4000 x 2221. I still have some minor glistening of various part of the display. But it is definitely much improved. Can't wait to get the time to do a full mission.
