Terrible FPS, Flickering

Postby MarkSC » Tue Jun 07, 2016 11:55 am

New user and potential customer here. I've been trying the demo version with P3D 3.3. With a pretty powerful rig (overclocked 4790k and GTX 970 with latest driver), my FPS drops to 30 or below if I increase the resolution above the minimum. Also, I have terrible flickering--nausea inducing even--unless I enable SGSS in Nvidea Inspector; however, doing so drops the FPS too low (35 or less even at lowest resolution).

I have tried every combination of anti-aliasing on and off I can think of (both in P3D and Flyinside). In order to obtain 60 FPS or higher with FlyInside, the only thing I have found that works is to set the resolution at minimal and to disable SGSS, Oh, I've also tried default and add-on aircraft with no difference. I'm not running any add-ons either.

Basically, I am looking for some guidance on what settings to use to increase the resolution and reduce flickering to acceptable levels. My P3D settings are not the issue. I have experimented with dropping everything in P3D to low or mid settings for autogen, water, etc., but that has little or no effect. I normally maintain 60+ FPS in P3D, with 100+ if I drop the settings.

edit: I should mention that I'm using the latest (1.52) of FlyInside. After watching several review videos, my experience is definitely atypical. Frustrating that I can't figure out why.

Thanks for any help.

Think he said no in 2nd paragraph Bruce ? Ok mate have you checked with windows to see if you have any background processes running ? Is Hyperthreading turned off in your Bios ?

And I take it you have only the GPU ?

This is definitely an atypical experience! So low resolution, stock aircraft, low simulator settings (auto gen low, traffic off, shadows off, etc) are resulting in 35fps performance and flickering?

For reference I do most development on a GTX 970, mid-range settings, and have 50-60s fps and no flicker. Could I try debugging on your computer sometime early next week? Shoot me an e-mail dan@flyinside-fsx.com

I'm sure a Noob question here...
But I used to run "unlimited FPS" in the Pre-VR era of P3D...

Should we be using the frame limiter I take it?

I had terrible flickering too after i reset the p3d graphics settings to the default profile, which (among other things) re-activated the frame limiter and set it to 30fps.

The simulator was unplayable in VR after that. I shut down the application and did a res-start, and sure enough FlyInside told me to disable the frame limiter which made things fine again.

maybe check that your frame limiter is off?

I usually run unlimited (though I mostly use FSX SE) but havent seen any adverse side effects limiting to 30 FPS to enable smooth multiplayer flights (and certain missions)

Thanks, everyone. I was able to get the FPS up to 90 by disabling HDR lighting and making a few other tweaks. However, the shimmering is still a big problem. I have no shimmering at all on my monitor--only with Flyinside. I know that is a partly or entirely from the lower resolution, but the shimmering makes flying pretty unenjoyable for me. Any tips?

Try changing the filtering to anisotropic. Have you enabled AA within the game settings?

Yes, 16x filtering and 8x AA. The flickering is awful. Even the lines of the box around the FlyInside app flicker horribly. It's simply unusable. I don't have this issue with standalone P3D or with any other Oculus app.
