Got my 1080

Postby ProsperGuy » Sun Aug 28, 2016 3:51 pm

The anniversary update for windows 10 really did a number on my system, and I was forced to do a clean re-install of windows 10.

I picked up an open box GTX 1080, and decided to kill 2 birds with one stone.

I am in the process of re-installing everything. I am downloading Prepar3d right now.

I'll post my results later today. I am upgrading from a 970.

Congratulations! You should be well pleased with the 1080. I took the same jump a few weeks ago.

I kept getting corrupted downloads of P3D, so I ran into installation problems. I finally got it installed late last night. I have to work most of the day, so I will get all my aircraft and scenery installed tomorrow and give a report back.

I will install ORBX Global, Vector, mostly Pacific Northwest, and Alaska in addition to Tapini. I spend most of my time flying the Milviz t-38, Aerosoft Beaver, and twin Otter. I also have A2A T-6.

I did mess around a little with the settings running P3D stock, and everything is running nicely so far. I'll report more tomorrow.

Looking forward to your report. I'm on a 970 currently, and also thinking about moving up to the 1080. I'm interested to hear about increases in performance to help decide if it's worth the $$.

Cheers.

I'm installing all my ORBX products right now.

Just for fun, I turned everything down to the lowest/off setting to see what I would get. I was using the default P3D scenario. It is Eglin Air Force Base, I think, with the F-22. I was getting 195/90 on my frames. After adjusting the resolution to the Max inside FlyInside, I was getting 140/90.

I tried upping the resolution to 4800 x 2967 to see what happened, and my framerate dropped to 130/90. I did not see any noticeable difference, so I went back to the max resolution on the flyinside menu.

I have played around with various settings, and I have seen frames as low as 28/90 with lots of AI traffic (100% on airlines, and 50% on all other). The biggest difference I have seen is that even at 28/90, I do not get any judder and it is entirely useable. With the 970 card, that would not have happened. If the sim framerate dropped much below 45, the async-timewarp would become unstable and I would get judder.

So, my overall first impression is that you will not see huge a huge difference in FPS in the simulator, but the async-timewarp seems to benefit from the 1080 to where the experience is totally enjoyable even at much lower sim framerate.
