Calibrate world scale... ideas?

The "individual" world scale probably depends a lot on each individual's perception, their sight, optical corrections, pupillary distance, etc. but there's gotta be a way to help us set a world scale without actually having the first hand experience of having been in an aircraft cockpit.
Perhaps by displaying an object with a well-known size in the FI environment?
"If you recenter your view and hold a CD 50 cm or 20 inches from your eyes, it should match this circle."?
Can anyone come up with a better, more reliable, easier solution?
