Hmmmm. What's the OS? Windows 10?
So just some thoughts:
- Have you tried ALT+ENTER shortcut?
- In the properties of the link or .exe file you can also set in which mode you want the program to start
- Have you tried deleting the preferences in XP10? (make backup first though) /output/preferences

Here's How:
Find the shortcut for the computer game you want to play in windowed mode instead of full screen.
Right click on the shortcut, select Properties.
In the Target field add: -window at the end.
Click OK.
I know those are very basic things, but maybe it is just a small thing?
