Help on black screen bug.

Postby Tony » Mon Jun 12, 2017 2:20 pm

Guys I want to reproduce this bug on my system as I am doing personal testing. I need to know the settings at the time, any addon scenery used, Aircraft at the time. Your peripherals ie type of hotas, joystick or yoke. Pedals and the like and any relevant plugins please.

My signature should cover the hardware bits of your questions and as my plugins currently stand, i currently have:-

Autogate - got black screen before i installed this one
DataRefEditor - don't really use, but it's in Resources\Plugins
FlyInsideXP - i'm not sure, but i'd guess this one might be involved
FlyWithLua - ageing memory could be flawed, but i am fairly sure i was getting black screen before installing this one
GndHandling - JAR Designs addon that comes with their A330 and was definitely getting BS before installing this
QPACTerrainData - i think this came with the FF 777, but either way, i was getting the BS before installing it
xmultithrottle - again, was getting BS before installing this one
XPLM.framework - absolutely no idea what this does, but might have something to do with xsquawkbox that i removed
XPWidgets.framework - as above
X-RAAS2 - was getting BS before installing this one

As for which planes i get the BS with, it is pretty much all of them from the Eclipse 550NG, Pipistrel Panthera, JD A320, JD A330, SSG 748-i, FF 767 and 777 Worldliner

As for addon scenery, i have 2 tiles of Ortho4XP, for the areas around Heathrow and East Midlands and freeware add-on scenery from MisterX6 for JFK, LAX, SFO and BOS. I have had BS well away from of all of these though, so i am fairly sure that it isn't these that are causing it.

You have probably thought of all of the following, but just in case, a seemingly crazy idea might actually help solve the problem.

Don't the work-arounds provide any clue as to the state that the graphics engine is getting into. For example, changing from HD to non-HD solves the problem, but if you change it back to HD again, the problem still persists. Also, if you move AA up whilst you have the headset off and then drop it to 0 again, where i generally have it, the problem appears to go away, albeit mainly temporarily. If Laminar could provide some clue as to what their code does when the user changes these settings, maybe it might explain why changing them gets it out of that state and hopefully how it might have got into that state in the first place.

For example, might there be an inadvertently changed/called directX flag/command that might cause the screen to be drawn in black, yet still allow you to see the various icons, pause, flight setup etc. in the top right of the Sim window?

Is it just Nvidia cards that suffer from BS, as it might just be their drivers that are flaky? It wouldn't be the first time. I have the latest drivers and have had this problem now for at least 3 iterations, so it wouldn't just be the latest version.

For me, at least, there don't appear to be any clues on my MSI afterburner screen, that i have running all the time, displaying GPU and CPU temps and fan speeds, GPU and CPU usage, GPU memory usage and system RAM usage.

Good Luck and let me know if you need any more detail.

Can you reproduce a black screen at will ? I mean if Dan was to teamviewer with you, could you reproduce it on command as such mate ?

I've done the poll.

As for reproducing the bug, it tends to happen after say an hour's worth of flying, rather than say in the first ten minutes of use, so whether that brings any clues or not, it does make it tough to reproduce at will. One thing that I had 2-3 times last week was the cross-eyed bug and as that hasn't happened again for a few days, it could be that this is just another symptom of the same root cause. The cross-eyes certainly disappeared when i moved to non-HD mode, so the work around appears to be the same.

It's late now, but I will have a play tomorrow and see if I can find a way to force it. Sometimes it happens when I am zoomed in on a part of the cockpit or just after I have pressed the FI activate button to display the fps, but I don't know whether this is just a coincidence.

Is teamviewer from the same peeps as teamspeak btw?

Just thinking out loud, could the common link be something like the Logitech gaming software or something else that runs in the background? I use that for my mouse, keyboard, headphones and a G13 keypad, the latter 2 of which I don't tend to use for XP.

Anti-virus software is likely to be on most PCs, so maybe it is something caused by a particular version of that. I use Mcafee total protection btw.

Could it be that something momentarily taking the focus away from FI/XP is occasionally tripping it up?

There is so many variables as you can see. Nailing it down is the tricky part. No 2 systems are alike even though yours and mine are close. Teamviewer enables Dan to remote look at your pc (Not your porn collection) and then he can trouble shoot. It's a great help. Please keep experimenting mate ;)

Hi Tony,

For me, there are two separate Black Screen issues that may not have the same cause:

1. Screen goes completely black. The workaround is to change the AA setting to restore normal display. Returning back to initial AA setting allow to continue flight.

2. Textures turn black. All I can see are some grey clouds and the cockpit's MFDs. Cockpit structure is still present but all textures are black. Going to non-HDR mode restore display, going back to HDR mode shows the black textures again. Changing the AA settings lead to a FI crash.

I have the feeling that the black textures issue, the "cross eyed" issue reported in another thread and the "sudden crash" issue that I often experience may have the same cause.

Here are my addons:
Ortho4XP - W2XP-Pilot Plus LSGG - Aerosoft Airport Zurich V2 - AeroSoft Airport Toulouse - JustSim Nice Côte d'Azur - JustSim Innsbruck - XPFR Paris Orly - LIMJ Genoa Airport Italy (from x-plane.org)

Thanks,
Fabrice
