Help for new user please

Postby davebelsey » Fri Aug 04, 2017 7:46 am

I am a new user of the Oculus Rift and Touch controllers, so I have downloaded and installed the FSX version of your program which appeared to go smoothly.

When I start a flight, after just a few seconds FSX crashes (Oculus Home is still working).

According to Event Viewer the faulty module is MSVCR80.dll version 8.0.50727.8428

This computer is running Windows 8.1 (64 bit) and my hardware is as follows:

i7 4790K overclocked to 4.6GHz
16 GB Corsair Vengeance Pro @ 2133Mhz
MSI GeForce GTX980 Gaming 4GB Twin Frozr
Windows and FSX are on separate Samsung Pro 850 SSD's

I have tried reinstalling the Microsoft Visual software, but with no success.

Can you please advise me?

Dave.

EDIT: I now find that the sim will run if I remove the DX10 fixer from the cfg file. However, the graphics are awful - can I get any advice on settings
e.g. I was using NVidia Inspector, is that still influencing the graphics, if so what settings do I need.

Hi Dave and welcome to the forum :)

As always please put your setup into your signature and please upload at least the FlyInside log file.
Can you fly without any problems if not using FlyInside?

Stephan,

I have added my pc spec to my signature as requested.

I can confirm that FSX was working very well indeed in FSX with the DX10 Fixer prior to getting the Oculus Rift.

I have now reverted to DX9, but I'm not sure what I need to do in NVidia Inspector as a result of that change, or what to change in FSX settings or FlyInside from the default.

Thanks for that :)
Can you still open and run FSX in plain 2D, without the Rift? Or does it also crash when running on a monitor?
I have to ask Tony about the DX10 Fixer stuff since I don't use FSX, but did you do a search on the forum?

EDIT: It seems that DX10Fixer ist not compatible: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3948&p=17582&hilit=Fixer#p17582
You can find the log files from FlyInside in C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Roaming\FlyInside. Maybe deleting your fsx.cfg fixes it? (Back it up before, just in case)

Hi Stephan,

I have just reset FSX to DX10 mode and it is working fine on my monitor.

I am attaching the log file, I hope this helps.

Dave.

Dx10 and flyinside don't work well together. After unchecking the dx10 in fsx. Find your fsx.cfg and save it somewhere or delete. Then restart flyinside.

Thank you for the help so far ..... I have reverted to DX9 and this seems to have cured the Crash to Desktop.

I am now trying to improve the graphic quality without incurring OOM's, although I understand that I will not be able to reproduce the quality I have on my 2k monitor.

I would be grateful for any help regarding grahic settings, particularly for Antialiasing and Anisitropic etc. I have created a new profile in the Nvidia Control Centre for flyinsidefsx.exe which I assume is the correct way to go?

Any help would be gratefully received.

Dave.

Hi Dave ;) the biggest single thing you can do right now is grab windows 10. I believe the free upgrade path is still available somewhere. Or is there a reason you don't want too ?

Hi Tony,

Is Windows 10 likely to improve the VR experience, if so how?

It's reported by many users to be more stable and driver efficient and has dx11 and upcoming 12. Once you get rid of all the bloatware it's the best windows yet imo. I love it. Plus Oculus are orientated around win 10. You could always roll back if you are not happy with it. But it gets my vote mate.
