FIFS Beta2 Branch - 0.5.9.5 - HUGE scenery update!

Postby MalcolmFI » Mon Jun 24, 2019 2:27 pm

Hi all,

I realize that it's been a long time since our last update, but we've been hard at work. We're excited to release a new public build!

The most significant thing you'll notice is radically different scenery :) Scenery is now completely worldwide and is no longer limited to only the USA. Instead of using a large download, we now stream imagery as you fly. This means that most areas have 1 ft high-detail imagery, rather than generic land-classes. It looks way way better than it used to!

This build has a lot of new functionality, and I'm sure a lot of bugs. We've published it to a new branch so that you can always go back to the current version if you run into too many. See the opt-in instructions at the bottom of the post -- they've changed. If you've updated successfully, Help -> About will show 0.5.9.5

  • Adds all-new world-wide streaming scenery
  • Huge improvements to helicopter flight model
  • Improvements to "Reset Flight" functionality
  • Adds system for importing custom imagery and building scenery areas manually
  • Start of tooling for building aircraft, flight models, and cockpits in-simulator
  • Misc bug-fixes and performance improvements.

Anyway - looking forward to everyone's feedback! Does it crash for you (please send reports), does it run smoothly? What are your favorite areas to fly?

Opting into Website-Version Beta:
1. Turn on Debugging Tools from "Help -> About -> Usage Options"
2. Open "Debugging Tools -> Debug Diagnostics"
3. Expand "Debug Options"
4. For "Updates URL" specify "https://cdn.flyinside-fsx.com/SimLatest.ClosedBeta2/" (the final slash is important)
5. Restart your sim
6. Use "Sim -> Check for Updates" - It should show a prompt for version 0.5.9.5 currently

Opting into Steam Beta:
1. Open Steam
2. Go to the "Library" section
3. Right click on "FlyInside Flight Simulator"
4. Select Properties
5. Go to the "betas" tab
6. From the "Select the beta you would like to opt into:" dropdown, select "beta2"
7. Let Steam do its update thing!

Thanks!
Malcolm

I’m updating and it seems to be stuck when it hits 23/215. I’ve restarted and it’s done the same?

jazz-meister - One of the files in the update is pretty large, ~1GB so it may just be taking its time to download. If you get stuck I'd recommend PMing Malcolm who can send you a Steam key (to avoid the updater entirely) :)

Have checket som different locations and it look great, but hope for the future that there will be more autogen buildings and autogen building at every airport, looks better than just a landind strip :) :) :)

But scenery runs very smooth an alle my settings is on max, no lags what so ever by loading scenery when you fly, can feel that its streaming, runs like its is on my HDD.

Keep up the good job, you are on the right way wit this :D :D :D

I’m stuck on 23 also. Gone over to Steam and it’s coming down smoothly.

Is streaming the scenery the future of FIFS? Will offline users stay stucked with the actual offline scenery?
Or will there perhaps be the possibility to save the aeras one has flown through, for users without an/with
a too slow internet connection?

We cache some things likely as you fly through (elevation, buildings, roads), but Bing ToS prevent us from caching the base imagery itself. Unfortunately there isn't a good alternative to the streaming imagery for offline use (although we do want to improve the offline scenery).

For reference a 5mbit connection is ideal for streaming scenery, but you could probably get by with a slower connection.

Dan and your team.
All I can say is F...Fantastic. And I’m not stammering here.
This is a Quantum leap forward in your endeavors. Flew in the UK, US, New Zealand. All the same quality and that’s with my old DK2 Oculus Rift. Can see our individual cars and houses so easily.
I have flown just Flight VFR and was waiting for Volume 3, North England. I no longer have the need.
10/10 team and it’s on it’s way to being the Supreme Simulator.
P.s. I did enjoy having the three levels of colors adjustments in FlyInside FSX. :(

Also, how do I remove the little generated houses?
