FIFS Beta2 Branch - 0.5.9.6 - Stability improvements

Postby MalcolmFI » Wed Jul 03, 2019 12:45 pm

Hi all,

We appreciate your recent feedback on our big scenery update! In this new revision, we've fixed some crashing and stability issues that several users were experiencing, as well as a couple of bugs:

  • 737 altimeter numbers now display correctly.
  • Moving map is now clickable again for quick navigation.

As always, keep us posted on any bugs or crashes you run into (please send reports), and let us know how smoothly the sim runs.

Opting into Website-Version Beta:
1. Turn on Debugging Tools from "Help -> About -> Usage Options"
2. Open "Debugging Tools -> Debug Diagnostics"
3. Expand "Debug Options"
4. For "Updates URL" specify "https://cdn.flyinside-fsx.com/SimLatest.ClosedBeta2/" (the final slash is important)
5. Restart your sim
6. Use "Sim -> Check for Updates" - It should show a prompt for version 0.5.9.6 currently

Opting into Steam Beta:
1. Open Steam
2. Go to the "Library" section
3. Right click on "FlyInside Flight Simulator"
4. Select Properties
5. Go to the "betas" tab
6. From the "Select the beta you would like to opt into:" dropdown, select "beta2"
7. Let Steam do its update thing!

Thanks!
Malcolm

....meanwhile i'm at 0.5.9.7

unfortunately, nice as though things have improved since 0.5.9.5, the sim keeps crashing after a few minutes in flight.

Depending on the gfx settings it can take a few minutes or a bit longer, but it will always crash.

I notice that VRAM (6 GB) and system RAM (18 GB) is rapidly filling up to reach its ceiling. It's only increasing, never releasing/ dumping any memory.

Is there anything obvious i am overlooking here or is my system just not up to it for VR ? (i7 980X, 18 GB DDR3 RAM, SSD, GTX780 STRIX (6 GB VRAM) with Oculus Rift and up to date runtime.

I have no such instability issues when flying VR with Aerofly FS2 with heavy add-on scenery, or with FSX Steam using FLyInside FSX and heavy scenery and PMDG add-ons or alike.

Thanks for the update :P

I've juste made a short flight (LFGY->LFST) with the map activated, and no crash :D

avhpilot - Could you submit a couple of bugsplat reports and include your e-mail? Then e-mail malcolm@flyinside-fsx.com and let him know. We'll dig into those crashes you're getting. It's quite possible we have a memory leak going on.

NFelix - What GPU do you have, and are your drivers up-to-date? Also, which version of FlyInside was the last which worked correctly for you?

And thank you for the feedback everyone!

Thanks,
Dan

Hi

I have a GTX1060 with 6GB. I updated the drivers about 2 weeks ago

The last version working was 0.5.9.5, although i haven't tested it very much

The latest build is unfortunately even less stable for VR than the last. When it works, it's beautiful. But the persistent issue I'm seeing is that if I don't pause the sim until every single element has loaded, the Oculus service crashes and will then only display on my monitor until I quit and restart FFS. It's just not stable to run VR while the sim is loading its elements. I'd like to see an option to have a preloading screen that just gives a status bar until absolutely everything is loaded and ready for the start of the scenario before switching to live rendering.

avhpilot, NFelix, mobiusfix - Could you shoot me an e-mail dan@flyinside-fsx.com ? If you're willing I'd like to schedule a TeamView. I have a lead on the memory leaks but I'd like to do a little bit more testing and narrow down the issues you're running into.

Thanks,
Dan
