Recording videos

Postby gerod » Sun Oct 21, 2018 10:10 am

Hello,
I tried recording video by using the FFS internal feature. Only one format is proposed (h264) - I had a look in debugging tools but I have not found some specific settings -. FreeFLV player was able to read the first image and after there was a black display without any message. I tried with others players (VLC, ..) and the format was unknown. I tried also to record by using the W10 internal feature (W+ALT+R) which works very well for others sims: nothing ran.
Best regards

Hello,
The file recorded by FFS can be read without problem with the player MPC-HC but the size is pretty high : about 100 MB/mn.

Hello,
MPC-HC is fine for the images but there is no sound whatever the options in settings panel. Obviously recording was done with sound.

Hi gerod,

Glad you were able to get the videos playing. VLC should support h264 files, so I'm surprised that didn't work. Maybe try updating or reinstalling if you want to play them on that platform.

Currently the only option for playback is h264, which is a purely video file type with no sound. We do plan on adding sound compatibility in the near future, though.

Regards,
Malcolm

The video recorder is pretty basic (we originally added it so we could start making trailers). As Malcolm mentioned, we're working on adding support for recording sound, and recording to .mp4 also. We use the program "ffmpeg" to convert .h264 -> .mp4, at which point you can play in anything, upload to YouTube, etc. I know that's not user friendly though, hence us looking into integrating this into the sim ourselves.

Thanks,

Hello,

I did a path for using ffmpeg and it works fine: the gain between h264 and mp4 is between 25 and 40 % depending on the recording (day, night, scenery, ...). To get the sound I made two tests:

- I recorded a FFS flight using Fraps. It was OK but the resulting avi file was enormous: about 1 GB for 30 seconds. I converted this avi file with ffmpeg and the resulting mp4 file was only of 7 MB for 30 seconds, what is a normal size, and it was OK with the sound;

- The method I use with others simulators cannot be utilized because the recording counter is not displayed on the screen and nothing is done after the classical combination (WIN+ALT+R).

Even if these questions are out of scope it would be great to have a quick explanation about these strange points.
Thank you very much.
Best regards

Hello,
Another minor question about recording videos. If the file name is not specified in the video panel resulting files are named FlyInsideVideo...h264 and the type of these files is well indicated (h264). Now if the name is changed the file is declared having the type "file" and the conversion to mp4 by ffmpeg is only possible by adding the extension h264. It works because the file has really this h264 extension but it was confusing. Thank you for a future correction and also for some explanations about proposed choices (stretch to fill, scale to fit).
