Throttle Console

Postby Jst » Sun Jan 24, 2016 12:29 pm

One thing I have noticed with VR that if you have your controls positioned similar to what they are in the sim it makes it far more immersive. I have already built a throttle control from scratch for vintage single seat but I am now working on a project that should not take long, I hope! I have purchased a throttle control unit out of a Tornado GR1 and converting it to a flightsim controller. It will be housed in a side console with additional switch panels and a tornado GR1 under carriage lever but will not be based on the Tornado but more for general purpose use. The wiring and switches are already there wired and all working I have managed to identify nearly all of the wiring and there is already potentiometers fitted to the throttles. I have attached a couple of pictures of work in progress. Once this is finished I am going to be on the look out for a general aviation throttle unit.

Awesome project, I bet that unit cost a pretty penny!

It was not to bad actually it was £180 but all the switches are there including a rotary switch on the throttle levers. I have just finished repainting it I need to now build the casing that it will be housed in and I can then add the other switch panels as I go. I will use two Leo Bodnar controller boards there is 17 switch activations on the throttle grips alone the flaps will have a potentiometer and they are already switched on the up mid and down position so there will be a choice of what type of flap activation.

Very nice! I have a few bits I've always intended to set up, a nice old bakelite trim wheel (I think from a Vampire) and an undercarriage lever from a Lightning.

Go for it, with what's available today regarding the electronics it does not need much other than a bit of imagination the one I am using now (see Below) has a undercarriage buttons from a hunter and flap switch from a Canberra I made the rest of the mechanisms myself once again just a bit of thought and imagination most of it came from B&Q ..

There is quite a few around the cover that covers the throttle slide is missing on that one and they are cheaper if you have one without an aircraft number. The one I got did not have an aircraft number but I know it was taken out of an aircraft based at RAF Marham in 2011. There is a great throttle on ebay from a Trojan but to bring it in from the States will cost because of Taxes and they insist on sending it by express delivery if they do that then you have to pay VAT on the delivery charge as well, but it would make a great throttle console.. I am also getting all the switches that have come out of the Tornado as well..
