IMPORTANT: Vive Flickering Survey

Postby admin » Tue Jul 12, 2016 9:48 am

Hi All,

I've been working on flickering, but want to make sure I hit a wide array of test-cases while fixing this up. If you are running FlyInside Vive, please take a minute to fill out the following:

1. Are you encountering flickering since the latest SteamVR update?
2. How bad is the flickering, how frequent?
3. Which simulator are you running?
4. What frame-rates do you get?
5. What CPU?
6. What Graphics Card?
7. What OS?
8. What resolution?
9. Are you running any add-ons, and what are your graphics settings like?

Thanks a bunch all!

P.S. If anyone is willing to e-mail me their fsx.cfg (from C:\Users\YOUR_USER\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX), or their Prepar3D.cfg (from C:\Users\YOUR_USER\AppData\Roaming\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D), and finally their FlyInside ini files from C:\Users\YOUR_USER\AppData\Roaming\FlyInside, along with the answers to this survey, that'd be incredibly helpful. dan@flyinside-fsx.com

1. Yes. Horrible flicker after update. It was working buttery smooth before the update.
2. Very bad and often. The sim is unplayable right now.
3. FSX: SE
4. 40-60
5. i7 - 6700k - overclocked to 4.7GHz
6. EVGA GTX 980ti Superclocked
7. Windows 10
8. Highest possible in FlyInside. Have tried different resolutions, do not seem to matter
9. Orbx Norway, REX. High terrain settings, low traffic and weather settings.

Just a pattern I'm noticing, everyone getting terrible flicker seems to be running a 4+ghz overclock. Does reducing your overclock make any difference? Going to experiment on my end with OC.

1 - Yes and a huge difference. Had no flickers and just slight judder in complex scenery areas.
2 - Very bad and constant - probably around 2-3 Hz - though the regression to the previous Nvidia driver cut that way back to around a flicker every couple of seconds or longer but it is also very dependent on scenery complexity.
3 - FSX:SE. Haven't tested in P3D.
4 - Going from memory it was very close to 30/90. I am locked at 30 in FSX for multiplayer and have been doing a lot of multiplayer recently that was butter smooth. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFSH0gBPZGk for example) I haven't tried multiplayer since the SteamVR update.
5 - i7-5930k at 4.5 GHz, hyperthreading turned off.
6 - EVGA GTX 1080 FTW that boosts to 2.1 GHz when in FSX/FlyInside
7 - Windows 10, 64-bit
8 - 1920x1080
9 - Orbx global base/vector, various scenery regions, extra airports and airplanes, etc. A loaded down system. But the big thing was it all worked great before the SteamVR update. With the Nvidia driver coming out July 6, and the SteamVR update on the 7th, I'm not sure now but probably had both update before trying FlyInside/FSX so had both changes resident and active which made things especially bad. But now after reverting the Nvidia driver to the pre-no boost clock state, I still get flickers but not quite as bad. I had none before, though.

Orbx FTX Global Base, FTX Global Vector, scenery, airport packs

1. Are you encountering flickering since the latest SteamVR update?
I don't think so. I am not sure of what is meant by flicker. Perhaps someone could produce a video that shows what is meant by flicker. When I look up the definition some of the issues I have could be defined as flicker. I had a situation before the Nvidea driver updates where the vive display would go off for a millisecond or 2 with a frequency of every few seconds. Recently after the updated nvidea driver I am getting a vive display off for a longer period about a second which occurs about once a minute.

2. How bad is the flickering, how frequent?
Now it happens about once a minute

3. Which simulator are you running?
FSX and P3D

4. What frame-rates do you get?
Not sure

5. What CPU?
I7 6700 4.5MHz

6. What Graphics Card?
GTX 1070 1971MHz

7. What OS?
win 10 64

8. What resolution?
P3D is the highest that I can set in FlyInside settings menu. FSX tweaked to 4000 2221 in the configuration file.

9. Are you running any add-ons, and what are your graphics settings like?
Orbx global base/vector, various scenery regions, extra airports and airplanes.
Z370 Chipset ASUS MB, I7 8700, 32Gb DDR4, M.2 - SSD, Win 10 64
