It must be incredibly frustrating when it freezes. I have been down that road, not with freezing but CTD. I spent hours and hours trying various things when I first got the Vive (even took a day off work lol ) and was almost ready to go back to non VR thinking that the Vive driver or FI was completely unstable.
So I thought I had nothing to loose and uninstalled everything including the driver. I began to take one step at a time - Nvidia latest driver then latest P3D. Test OK after two short flights, no CTD. Then FI - again two flights - all working no CTD. Really happy at this point as I knew I had fixed it. It was at this point I found *my* problem which was to do with a program to control process affinity. I also moved my lighthouses which fixed the apparently random loss of the renderer due to loosing sight of the headset.
I did reinstall FTX global, vector and lots of ORBX airports but it really cost a lot in frames especially as my non-negotiable software is AS16. So I have gone back to vanilla and will wait for the Rex HD airports and give that a shot. With VR I am more concerned with flying now than with eye candy. The P3D rendering of regions is OK for me and it does have major roads even in country Victoria Australia for VFR flying.
I can assure you that my GTX 1080 with the latest driver and FI 1.62 do work reliably well together.
All the best with your troubleshooting
