Hey Dan,

With the disappointment of such a prohibitive price of the CV1 would you consider supporting the HTC Vive also (not that we know what it's going to cost yet)
Given the specs/resolution/fov are identical with the Vive, and maybe some things even better...
Would love to hear your thoughts.

edit: I see you have it down as 'planned'... But I guess now where is it on your list of priorities, and how difficult do you see it being to add Vive support?

I expect the HTC Vive will be priced very similarly to the Rift, possibly even higher as it is already being touted as a 'premium' product.

I have not ordered and not just about price even though I would say a bit steep, but this is earlier than I expected so its not like I have been on the edge of my seat and there seems to be a lot of speculation about new developments that Vive will announce regarding new technology once I have seen what Vive have to offer then I will decide. Obviously resolution being a main factor but a big issue is also field of view. I think there should also have been an opportunity to buy it without headset and controller helping to keep the price down and if the earphone can not be detached it will make it difficult to wear headphone with mic etc. So for the sake of waiting a month later for deliver it is well worth waiting to see what happens.

Regarding the OLED and lenses, Rift & Vive are almost the same. But with the Vive you also getting the two "Touch" sticks and the two room laser scanner
and the new camera for the "Chaperone"-Mode. I expect a higher price because they dont have Facebook behind them.

VR is a high-end hobby and you need some $, i allways knew this, spending thousands of € alone for my 7.2 Surround systems and a high end beamer,
compared to this VR is allready cheap.

Sony will mabe win here, a PS4 + PSVR will not cost $1500, but i dont expect the PC VR quality.

My priority is to support whichever hmd I get my hands on first as quickly as possible, and whichever I get my hands on second as quickly as possible also ;)

From a technical perspective vive will take a bit longer to add support for than cv1 due to the differing sdk.

I think it's unfortunate that cv1 costs as much as it does but I'm very excited and bet that the quality will justify the price! It's an extra $200 compared to what we were expecting, but that's not a huge amount given the total cost with expensive pc. I am sad for the people it will keep out due to affordability.

I will definitely be supporting vive! I will be surprised if vive is cheaper than oculus+touch though. No matter what this first gen is looking to be expensive.

The price is kind of a mixed bag. Although some expected it, I think it's obvious it was a shock to a lot of people. But it is new technology, pretty complex implementation, and it's not being built out in multi-million unit lots to get in on deeper volume discounts and amortizations. And even at that, Palmer said it is still subsidized and I think to the tune of about $100 per which would make the true no profit cost closer to $700.

I would expect (i.e. just a guess) that the Vive with the added camera and controllers might come in closer to $800 which could put price to us in the $900-1000 range unless Valve decides to subsidize too.

I think these are just the consequences of being at the bleeding edge of this technology. On the other hand, I think what Oculus has built is probably going to be mind-blowing when we finally get our hands on it, and the same for Vive. I don't really care too much about the controllers, but the expanded tracking volumes, apparently on both, as well as longer cables, are going to make getting out of the planes the same kind of experience it is with cars. The Vive camera makes it apparently trivial to see our keyboards and sticks too which is pretty amazing. I can't wait to try that.

But either way, it looks like all the fun has to wait another few months at least...

both the Oculus & Vive have strengths & weaknesses
Most popular games and experiences will eventually support both
The movement aspect of Vive differentiates itself from Oculus
Both will have good hand movement sensors but these may not be so useful in flight sim
having joystick and throttle or yoke will remain a better option than above mentioned controllers as they can be felt
The Leap Motion device has potential but failed miserably on my system so will try again in a few months
