Anyone want to do a CV-1 vs DK-2 review?

Postby drumsonly2002 » Mon Apr 25, 2016 6:30 pm

Got a DK-2 but shy to pull the trigger on the CV-1. Is the CV-1 an "A-Ha" moment vs the DK-2? Frame rate wise, is the DK-2 a bit better? Pros / Cons of each? Wait for a CV-1 version 2? For non tube liners, single prop, helicopters DK-2 vs CV-1 comparison. Any comments appreciated. In Canada the CV-1 very expensive thus a bit apprehensive of an upgrade. Thanks.

I think you will find that the CV1 is better in almost all aspects, except maybe FOV. But I'm just basing that statement on what I've read, I don't have my CV1 yet, only DK2.

To me, just having better positional tracking and slightly higher resolution will be worth it. My DK2 has slightly jittery positional tracking, and it's very annoying.

A comparison of DK-1, DK-2, and CV-1. http://vr.mkeblx.net/oculus-sim/ You can fly around, zoom in and out. Can evaluate SDE of the units. The DK-2 seems to hold it's own though the CV-1 has less SDE. Wondering if a DK-2 with the SDE mod holds up a bit better against the CV-1? Thinking of using my DK-2 for another year. By then maybe there will be a CV-2.

I've had both. Up close in the cockpit definitely better, but not quite perfect. Seems like it's just a touch out of focus. Longer range is much better, like intercepting aircraft or looking at ground objects from above. It was a awesome experience the first time I looked down to the ground after I lifted off.

I can fly the PMDG 737 from the captains seat, no need for a popup for the FMS, HUD is mind blowingly good. For some reason, the Aerosoft 318-321 isn't quite as crisp in the cockpit. VRS Superbug is worth the price of admission. Carrier ops around the boat, or rolling in on a bomb run, or running a high angle intercept, they all feel really natural. Meatball is visible at about a mile, and grabbing a 3 wire is pretty sweet. Aerosoft F-14 is wicked as well. Couple of flights in the old Carenado F33 were pretty good too.

Screen door effect is virtually gone. I don't notice it. FoV is a bit different, but only when I really think about it. It's not a big enough of a difference to really even comment on IMO.

For me it's worth the upgrade. Now I got to decide if I'm selling the DK2.

Nice reviews all. Mr G that is particularly useful to us simmers and very detailed so thanks for that. If you have the time or inclination then try some whirlybirds and give us your opinion with the cv1. I'm a late June cv1 getter and sold my Rift in January and I cannot play/fly/sim on a 2d screen anymore after years and years. But once I had vr there is no substitute :) withdrawal symptoms? Hells yes !!!!

Dodosim 206 is wicked. Doing approaches and takeoffs from moving ships is awesome. The feeling of taking off from a carrier that's moving at 30 knots , getting into a stable 'hover' (at 30 knots) and then sliding off the side of the ship and realizing you're actually moving? Crazy. Got to reinstall the cerasim 212...

They're crazy fun to fly in the rift, but it doesn't get you over the fact they're just slow. Maybe I'm just used to flying the Superbug, that gets you places :)

Enjoy the review. I fly the Dodo 206 and the Cera Sim Bell 412. Any frame rate hit with the increased resolution? thanks.

I've got it cranked, but I've got a pretty strong computer so I don't know if I'm the best benchmark. I actually haven't even looked at my FpS since hooking up the CV1, since there isn't really anything else I can do to up grade at this time, without tapping into the JPL for computing power :)

A little CV-1 / DK-2 comparison thread. https://forums.oculus.com/vip/discussio ... ake-vs-dk2 The DK-2 still has some usefulness to be had. I wonder if there will be a CV-2 available this time next year? Time will tell.
