Hey Dan, could eye images be being rendered twice?

Postby Robert » Thu Apr 21, 2016 7:12 am

Last night I posted a video with P3D and FlyInside on the Vive (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xy4a_MJ8GxA). Tony commented about judder maybe being more in the left eye view so I was looking more closely at the video and now am wondering if the eye images are being drawn twice?

If you look at the area where the two eye images meet, there is a thin line showing of the left eye in the right, but at the times where I turn my head quickly, it looks like there might be a stack of two images for each eye. Not sure exactly how to describe it but if you check the video, look near the center where right and left eye meet when there is particularly fast movement. It looks like each eye has a second image right behind it.

Am I seeing things or is that supposed to be like that from how you draw the eye views because of overlap or something?

Great stuff though. I'm not sure what it is about the view now. It just looks way better to me than the DK2. Maybe it's the slight resolution bump or something, but I'm loving this!

To me it was very noticeable and it seemed the left screen lags behind the right. And as Robert says, if you look in the middle of the screens you can at times see 3 images. The left and 2 overlapped on the right. Very strange. Any CV1 users see this or is it solely Vive ?

Thanks for the tip guys, but it's a red herring ;)

It's a glitch in my async timewarp, causing the artifact in the middle of the screen. FlyInside is definitely rendering both eyes, and then displaying both eyes, in lock-step. I'ts just mixing them together a tiny bit in the center for some reason.

Hi, I'm a newbie here. I too am getting the black flickering on the VIVE. I am running a pretty quick rig here. I7-6700k, 32gb ram, and gtx 980. Had the rift DK2 but it was pretty dim and resolution poor. The Vive would be excellent but for the black flickering. Any update would be most appreciated.

Still working on this glitch! For now you can mostly eliminate the flickering if you experiment with lowering resolution, lowering auto-gen, or setting the frame-limit to 60fps. Some combination of those tweaks should help, I'll be posting an update as soon as I have this bug worked out :)

Better stutter than flickering. If you look straight to the front the lower fps aren't really a problem with FSX, so if the screens don't turn black it would be great! I'm on the same high setup too like grinder99 (but with 16GB RAM)

Something else to look at, while I was playing with the settings in FSX (boxed not SE) I noticed that the aircraft shadows were only being projected onto one eye.
The left eye display had the correct shadows and the right didn't show any shadows at all.

I haven't tried this in P3D yet or FSX.SE but it could be another indicator as to where the issues are.
